Towards the end of the 1900s whilst living and working in Paris, Rothenstein met and was encouraged by James McNeill Whistler, Edgar Degas and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. It was also at this time that, having previously been introduced by Alphonse Legros (his former tutor at the Slade), Rothenstein was invited by Auguste Rodin to visit and spend time at Rodin’s home and studio, Meudon on the outskirts of Paris. It is here that Rothenstein produced a number of drawings and lithographs of the sculptor in 1897, one of which was published for the first time in the Artist Engraver collection of 1904 and is offered here.
