Ted Atkinson R.E.  F.R.B.S. (1928–2016)

Liverpool born, Atkinson originally studied sculpture under Karel Vogel before resuming his studies at the Slade School of Fine Art in London with fellow students Reg Butler and Henry Moore. Initially employed as a teacher, he took up sculpture full time in 1960, working in both Liverpool and Wivenhoe, Essex - the latter eventually becoming his full time base.  Significant architectural commissions saw his sculptures on display in Europe, Japan and the USA, and he was selected, along with Armitage, Caro, Chadwick, Frink and Moore to represent British sculpture at the World Expo in Brisbane in 1988.  An ongoing heart condition combined with the physical demands of sculpture led Atkinson to study printmaking at the Central School of Art in London. Equally accomplished in this field, his work was recognised with awards and was acquired by both institutional and private collectors around the world.  Despite poor health, Atkinson continued to work into his late eighties.
