Claire Leighton (1898-1989) is remembered as a prolific and gifted wood engraver, author/illustrator of a dozen acclaimed books, creator of successful design for glass and ceramic pieces and, mostly in the US, leading a highly popular series of lecture tours. Her distinctive style included natural, botanical, urban and industrial subjects, but it is for her instantly recognizable studies of people at work in manual or physical tasks on the land that she is most celebrated.
