Sussex born Rich spent 5 years at the legendary Slade School of Art and studied under Alphonse Legros and Professor Fred Brown. He was a member of the New English Art Club from 1898.

Rich followed the great English watercolour tradition of painting quickly, 'en plein' with a view to capturing the ‘emotions which the subject evoked’ rather than to faithfully reproduce a scene.

His exhibition credits include New English Art Club, the Piccadilly Egyptian Hall, the Alpine Club, Goupil's London Salon, the Carfax Gallery, the Leicester Galleries and Walker's Galleries.

Rich died in Tewkesbury in 1921 after which, Walker's Galleries held a retrospective and Manchester City Art Gallery a memorial exhibitions in 1923 and 1928 respectively. A scholarship in his name was established at the Slade School in 1934 and this is still awarded annually.
