A striking image of this historic and important church. St Clement Danes Church is situated between the Strand and Aldwych in the heart of London. The original church dates from 9th century although the current building was designed by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666. The church suffered a direct hit World War Two and was subsequently rebuilt and re-consecrated in 1958. William Webb Ellis, the founder of Rugby football was Rector between 1843-1855. St Clement Danes is the Central Church of the Royal Air Force. It is a perpetual shrine of remembrance to all those who have died in service in the RAF.
